Chapter 19
GETTING TO SLEEP THAT night was very difficult. Cora, who I was sure was betraying me, was sleeping only a few feet away from me. It took all my self-control not to look at her, I had to sleep facing the wall to stop myself from glaring at her the entire night.
The next morning was even worse. I had to interact with her and the others without letting anyone know that I knew what Cora was doing. I spent the entire morning, when I should have been packing up and eating with everyone else, trying to figure out just how far the betrayal went.
It was impossible for the Radiant Ones to keep finding us without help, did that mean Cora was telling them where we were at all times? It was the only explanation I could come up with. And, what about Horun, was he in on it? Or was he just as mixed up in handing me and Kai over to the cloaked stalkers as Cora was?
Also, what about what Cora had said about Horun? Was he actually with the Hithis? Had she just made that up? We hadnât seen any of them, so far. It was possible they had all died out, like the librarian had said. Cora could have made up the lie to throw me off her scent.
I had no answers, and no idea what to do.
Once we set off for the last planet on our list, Juâsho, Kai and I finally got a chance to talk for a few minutes without being overheard. I explained everything I had forgotten to tell him up until that point, all leading up to what I had overheard from Cora the night before.
Kai tried reasoning that what I had heard could really mean anything and didnât necessarily mean Cora was doing anything wrong besides not telling us who she was talking to. I tried to insist, telling him that I could feel in my gut that I was right, but Kai refused to believe that Cora would betray us without proof.
Before I could convince him that I was right, the ship started descending. Letting Cora hear us may be the quickest way to find out what she was up to, but I didnât want to find out what happened to âliabilitiesâ if I didnât like what she had to say.
As soon as Kai and I stopped talking, I noticed that this planet was considerably different from the ones we had visited so far. For one, I felt the slight bump that I had come to expect from entering an atmosphere and still saw no increase in light.
I leaned forward, trying to see through the windshield in the cockpit, but only saw a mass of grey. Curiosity pushed me to unbuckle my harness and, very carefully, move over to the shipâs entrance and peer through the tiny window in the door.
At first, there was still only a mass of grey that I couldnât identify. Then we sank below what I realized were clouds.
